"I always take my aviator gear with me. Always. No question. Your clothes are THE best for travel. I traveled 140+ days last year, and something aviator was always with me. Love your stuff! Here is my entry for the photo contest. I’m wearing the merino wool hoodie and I’m in Yellowstone National Park."
Every year at the end of summer, we do a photo contest to see where you and your gear have been the past year. We pick our favorites and open for voting. This years winner was Amy Nolan, travel aficionado and tap-dancer. While she is currently traveling internationally, she luckily had enough internet connection to answer a few questions for us.
What inspired you to take this trip?
Our national parks are gorgeous! I have family living in Montana so I was able to combine a trip to Yellowstone with a family visit.
You traveled 140+ days last year, what was your favorite trip?
I spent 3 weeks in Rwanda and Tanzania. The goal was to see the mountain gorillas in Rwanda and the chimpanzees in Tanzania.
What were your favorite activities (must see or do)?
Trekking in the mountains to find the animals is the main attraction on this trip. We had fantastic guides, who chatted with us and made the long hikes educational and fun. Another highlight was meeting the children in the local villages. I adored our interactions, and they loved seeing themselves on the camera screen.
How did you come up with your itinerary? Do you have any travel tips for people planning a similar trip?
For all trips to Africa, I recommend working with a well-regarded tour operator that is based in Africa. I think it’s better to hire a company who is from the area, has countless local connections, and knows the current status of lodges, parks, government restrictions, domestics flights etc.
And give yourself a day or two to acclimate before your trek starts. One woman in my group got a mild case of altitude sickness, because she trekked the day after she arrived.
How was the food, and did you have a favorite meal?
I am not a foodie and don’t recall a favorite meal. But I am amazed at what they do cook while on safari. The chefs are incredible and have delicious offerings each day. They packed us a lunch that we carried on our treks and ate in the jungle. After all that hiking, the packed lunch was perfection!
